the september project is revving up…

Well, both The September Project‘s blog/site and listserv are starting to become very active.

The September Project’s website eloquently lays out their purpose as “a grassroots effort to encourage events about freedom and democracy in all libraries in all countries during the month of September.”

While working the academic realm, I was able to participate in two local September Projects.  The first project was simple — mainly because it was our first year, and it was very last minute.  We posted on a wall a question to gauge people’s thoughts on the UN’s involvement with Rwanda, and provided markers for students, faculty, etc. to respond.  While the project didn’t generate the largest commotion — it was something that did get people to stop, think, and share their thoughts, ideas, opinions, etc.

The second year involved a screening of Good Night and Good Luck.  The film takes place in the McCarthy era, but some of the issues that the film covers are issues we experience in today’s world (e.g., news dissemination, civil liberties, etc.).  The beauty of the project was that Professor Harvey Klehr gave an opening presentation — he provided expert knowledge re: the film’s historical representations of the American Communist Movement, as well as Soviet espionage in the United States.  His opening remarks made me take a “new look” at the film (I had seen it twice before).  And judging by the lively audience discussion after the showing, his comments enhanced their film experience as well.

There are oodles of ideas for projects — Check out The September Project — either for a project idea for your workplace — or an event to attend.
